Attracting New Members Using Social Media
A common issue facing small Alliance chapters is the attraction of new members and students, particularly younger ones. An increasingly popular method to accomplish this is using social media. A quick review shows how aggressive some of these chapters have become. The use of Facebook is very common, often combined with Instagram. But other media are increasingly popular, such as Meetup, YouTube, Linked-in and Pinterest. Here are a few examples of social media use by several chapters.
- Small chapters using both Facebook and Instagram include Richmond (VA), Pittsburgh (PA), Jacksonville (FL), Maine (Portland), Aiken (SC), Lynchburg (VA), Tallahassee (FL), Hawaii, Providence (RI) and Reno Tahoe (NV).
- North Shore (IL) and New Haven (CT) AF chapters have combined Facebook and Meetup to attract new members. The use of Meetup often seems to attract younger individuals.
- The chapters in San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Hartford combine Facebook with YouTube videos to promote their events and classes.
- Other media used to supplement Facebook/ Instagram includes Pinterest (AF Detroit) and Linked-in (AF San Antonio and Gainesville).
