<product_title><![CDATA[Why living in France can cost half as much! With Adrian Leeds]]></product_title>
<product_content><![CDATA[Is it really cheaper to live in France? The answer is… yes—and no.After more than 30 years of living, working, and helping clients relocate to France, Adrian Leeds can tell you this with certainty:The cost of living in France is not just different—it’s structured differently. And unless you understand how it works, you can easily misjudge what your life here will truly cost.In This Webinar, We’ll Break It All DownJoin Adrian, along with our partners at AFUSA, for a candid and practical look at what it really costs to live well in France—based on real experience, not theory. Adrian will talk about:Housing costs: Renting vs. buying, what you actually get for your money, and why Paris isn’t the whole story Daily living expenses: Groceries, dining out, transportation—and how lifestyle choices change everything Healthcare and insurance: One of France’s biggest advantages—and what it truly costs (and saves) Taxes and hidden costs: What surprises Americans the most (and how to plan for it) France vs U.S. –– The real comparison: Why a direct dollar-for-euro comparison doesn’t tell the whole story. Many Americans arrive expecting France to be either dramatically cheaper or impossibly expensive. The truth lies somewhere in between. France offers something far more valuable: A different way of living—where quality of life often outweighs raw cost.Reserve your spot now. You will have a chance to ask questions. This webinar will be recorded for viewing at a later date on YouTube. Adrian Leeds is a French property expert and HGTV personality, as well as the author and editor of three “Nouvellettres®” (newsletters) a week! She arrived in Paris in 1994 with more than 21 years of experience in marketing and public relations, not to mention a daughter. In her need to survive in the City of Light as a single mother, she created a variety of businesses devoted to assisting other expats in their quest to fulfill their dream of living in France. Her company, the Adrian Leeds Group, is a licensed real estate agency offering complete property and relocation consultation services, primarily for North Americans and other Anglophones wanting to live and/or invest in France. This event will be on Zoom and is free for all Alliance Française members, AATF members, and free to readers of Adrian Leeds Nouvellettres®! <product_content><![CDATA[### Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET The Paris bistro is at its heart an unpretentious neighborhood gathering place serving traditional cuisine, having an active bar counter, and open beyond meal hours, with an ever-watchful owner on the premises. Yet use of the term has also evolved over the past 150 years. In this illustrated 1-hour lecture, Gary Lee Kraut examines the development and evolution of bistros in Paris since the late 19th century and tells of the place of old-fashion restaurant-bar bistros in the French capital today. Gary will also talk about various organizations devoted to defending and promoting traditional bistros, cafés and brasseries as essential vectors of sociability and art-de-vivre à la française. Originally from Trenton, New Jersey, Gary Lee Kraut is an American and French dual citizen who has been inspiring and informing travelers for 35 years through travel writing, consulting, lecturing, and guiding. He is the author of five travel guides and of hundreds of articles about France. He is also the author and voice behind four audio tours created for the VoiceMap app. Since 2009 he has operated the award-winning travel e-magazine France Revisited, francerevisited.com. He lives in Paris. At home in both French and American journalism circles, Gary served as Secretary General of the Association des Journalistes du Patrimoine, France’s Heritage Journalists Association, from 2016 to 2020. As a lecturer, Gary has presented extensively in the United States. Speaking at libraries, universities, and to Alliance Française groups, among others, he has made presentations as diverse as Understanding Patrimoine (Cultural Heritage) in France; American War Memories in France (WWI and WWII); the History of the Wines of Burgundy and Champagne; the Jewish History of Paris; Exploring Historic Gardens in Paris; Culinary Explorations in Paris; 3 Villas on the Riviera, and most recently Paris Bistro Life. <product_content><![CDATA[### Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET What is it about Paris—and French culture—that so powerfully moves and inspires people around the world? In this engaging talk, journalist and longtime Paris resident Elaine Sciolino explores the answer in one compelling word: seduction. She reflects on the emotional pull of France and invites us to consider how a simple street, the source of a river, or the hush of a museum can awaken curiosity, imagination, and connection. What makes Paris more than a destination? Why does French culture continue to captivate across generations and borders? Elaine Sciolino, best-selling author of six books, including La Seduction, The Only Street in Paris, The Seine and most recently Adventures in the Louvre, is a contributing writer and former Paris bureau chief for The New York Times, based in Paris. <product_content><![CDATA[Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET ### In honor of International Women's Month Four sisters from medieval Provence who, incredibly, all become queens: of France, England, Germany and Sicily. The new musical Four Queens brings their fascinating yet little-known story to dramatic life. Join us for a developmental reading of the script (book & lyrics, music to come) where six actors transport you back to 13th century Europe, teeming with holy wars, civil wars, and personal betrayals. These sisters also find themselves at war – sometimes as allies, sometimes as enemies – as they confront their greatest challenge: will their family love, and their beloved Provence, survive? As this program is in honor of International Women’s Day, Beth will also share the anthem she created for UN Women as well as the story behind it (it all started with a chance conversation on a playground in New York City…). BIO[Beth’s award-winning musicals, plays and songs](https://www.bethblatt.com/) have been performed in New York – at the United Nations, Lincoln Center – in [Chicago](https://www.bethblatt.com/mistress-cycle), DC, Tokyo, Hong Kong, [London](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKZ01iv96_I), [Paris](https://www.bethblatt.com/post/welcome-to-the-chapelle-expiatoire), the Côte d’Azur. She is also the founder of [Hope Sings](https://www.hopesings.net/), the for-benefit music organization whose work includes the [anthem for UN Women](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dnq2QeCvwpw), featuring 25+ internationally renowned artists. <product_title><![CDATA["Art Teaches Us about Life and Life Teaches Us About Art": Author Thomas Schlesser and Beth Gersh-Nesic discuss Mona's Eyes]]></product_title>
<product_content><![CDATA[### Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET In English. Art historian and novelist Thomas Schlesser joins art historian Beth Gersh-Nesic to discuss his brilliant coming-of-age novel about a 10-year-old girl who loses her sight for an hour and then spends a year learning how to see, guided by her beloved grandfather, Henry, whom she calls Dadé. Together they visit the Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, and Centre Pompidou to study one artwork each week because Henry wants Mona to memorize all the beauty and knowledge that art masterpieces can deliver, if indeed she becomes blind one day. Thanks to their lively banter, Mona and the reader learn about life, love, and how to look for the wisdom artists may convey through their art. Professor Schlesser will also tell the audience about his new novel, recently released in France, Le Chat du Jardinier (Albin Michel, 2026). Thomas Schlesser is the director of the Hartung-Bergman Foundation in Antibes, France. He teaches Art History at the École Polytechnique in Paris and is the author of several works of nonfiction about art, artists, and the relationship between art and politics in the 20th century. He is the grandson of André Schlesser, known as Dadé, a singer and cabaret performer who founded the Cabaret L ’Écluse. Mona’s Eyes is Schlesser’s second novel and his American debut. It has been translated into thirty-eight languages, including Braille. Schlesser was awarded 2025’s Author of the Year by Livres Hebdo. Beth S. Gersh-Nesic, PhD, is an art historian and the director of the New York Arts Exchange, an arts educational service. Known for her publications on Picasso, Cubism, the École de Paris, and the poet/critic André Salmon, she has been contributing articles on art history to [Bonjour Paris](https://bonjourparis.com/author/beth-gersh-nesic/) since 2016. <product_content><![CDATA[A presentation by Roger Mummert of [www.theparisproject.net](http://www.theparisproject.net)in association with the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ETThis event will run for 1h15min.Among the first Europeans to reach North America were French explorers and cartographers. The French established a unique relationship with Native Americans, who led them deep into this vast continent and revealed its riches. The maps created from their explorations fundamentally impacted how colonizers would lay claim to enormous portions of North America—and how emerging nations would later redefine those claims. Join us for an engaging conversation with Roger Mummert, writer and creator of [theparisproject.net](http://www.theparisproject.net), and Iris de Rode, historian of the French role in the American Revolution. Roger Mummert is a writer whose work on culture has appeared in the New York Times and elsewhere. He is the creator of [www.theparisproject.net](http://www.theparisproject.net) and the newsletter “Paris: A City of Ideas.”He is the creator and host of an ongoing series of Zoom presentations in association with the Alliance Française on Paris and French culture. Recent presentations can be viewed on the Federation of AF USA's You Tube channel. Dr. Iris de Rode is a historian of the French role in the American Revolution. In the family château of Major General François-Jean de Chastellux in Burgundy, she uncovered his unpublished papers. Chastellux, a French officer in Rochambeau’s army and close friend of George Washington, became the focus of her PhD (2019) and her book (2022), which received the Prix Guizot of the Académie Française in 2023. She has held more than twenty research fellowships, appears in Ken Burns’s PBS series The American Revolution, advises major museums and digital-heritage projects on both sides of the Atlantic, and is now completing a book on the French in the American Revolution. <product_content><![CDATA[3 PART SERIES: NOTRE-DAME DE PARIS – BEFORE AND AFTER THE FIRE ## PART 1 OF A 3 PART SERIES NOTRE-DAME DE PARIS - Before the Fire: The Construction and History of Notre-Dame de Pariswith Russell Kelley, author of The Making of Paris(in English) In partnership with the Alliance Française Miami Metro, the Alliance Française de Chicago, and the Friends of Notre-Dame de ParisThis event begins at 10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET and will be IN ENGLISH This illustrated lecture will explore the long and eventful history of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, from its foundation in 1163 to the devastating fire on April 15, 2019, which destroyed its attic, roof, and iconic spire. The story of Notre-Dame de Paris begins in 1163, when Bishop Sully laid the first stone on the Île de la Cité, at the heart of medieval Paris. One of the earliest Gothic cathedrals, it took 182 years to complete. Over the centuries, this architectural marvel hosted defining moments in French history, including the coronation of a young King Henry VI of England, the marriage of the future Henri IV and Marguerite de Valois, and the crowning of Napoléon I as Emperor. After falling into neglect during the Revolution, Notre-Dame was restored by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who added the iconic spire that tragically burned in 2019. Russell Kelley is Vice President of the Alliance Française Miami Metro and the author of The Making of Paris: The Story of How Paris Evolved from a Fishing Village into the World’s Most Beautiful City (Lyons Press, 2021) and Walking Through the Ages of Paris – Ten Historical Walking Tours Through the City of Light (Lyons Press, to be published in 2026). He has lived in Paris for over 30 years – and next to Notre-Dame for the past 20 years – and attended the first mass celebrated in the rebuilt cathedral on December 8, 2024. Join us for a conversation with France Today columnist and blogger Kristin Espinasse, who will talk about her new book, A Year in a French Life. Kristin will be in conversation with Renée Amory Ketcham, Vice-President of the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA and President of the Alliance Française de Greenwich. Kristin Espinasse is the writer behind French Word-A-Day, the long-running blog and newsletter she founded in 2002. Through brief, true-to-life vignettes from her family’s life in the south of France, she pairs approachable vocabulary with cultural context and a mini glossary of vocabulary that teachers and learners can use right away. Her everyday encounters often become spontaneous posts on the blog, keeping the journal fresh, alive, and relatable. She is the author of Words in a French Life: Lessons in Love & Language in the South of France, and her ongoing book series A Year in a French Life gathers favorite stories with beautiful photos, taken locally, to illustrate each chapter. For twenty years, Kristi has written for France Today magazine, notably the back-page column “Le Dernier Mot.” Recently, La Renaissance Française awarded her the Médaille d’or des Valeurs francophones for contributions that share and celebrate francophone culture. She has spoken at Shakespeare and Company and the American Library in Paris, and at Alliance Française meetups in Seattle and Denver. In talks with students, teachers, and general audiences, Kristi focuses on everyday encounters at the market, in the vineyard, or in a village café, for example, and what they reveal about language, etiquette, and the art of noticing. Warm, candid, and practical, she aims to help audiences build confidence and curiosity in French while savoring the small moments that make francophone life so engaging. <product_content><![CDATA[Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT (excluding AZ) / 3pm CT / 4pm ET Join us for a conversation with Jennifer Dasal, author of The Club: Where American Women Artists Found Refuge in Belle Époque Paris, to hear the deliciously entertaining, never-before-told history of a residence for American women artists in Paris from 1893 to 1914. In Belle Époque Paris, the Eiffel Tower was newly built, France was experiencing remarkable political stability, and American women were painting the town and gathering at a female-only Residence known as The American Girls' Club in Paris. Opened in 1893, The Club was the center of expatriate living and of dedication to a calling in the fine arts, and singularly harbored a generation of independent, talented, and driven American women. Now in The Club, curator, art historian, and podcast host Jennifer Dasal presents the never-before-told story of the Club, the philanthropists who created it, and the artists it housed. These women forged connections in the arts and letters with luminaries like Auguste Rodin and Gertrude Stein or became activists through their relationships with the likes of Emmeline Pankhurst. But just as importantly, these women's lives revealed the power of the Club itself, and the way that having a safe home for single women of ambition allowed them to grow as teachers, artists, suffragists, and people. Jennifer Dasal is an art historian, curator, lecturer, and author. After stumbling into an art history class as an undergraduate student at UC Davis, Jennifer was hooked. She went on to complete an M.A. in Art History from University of Notre Dame, and completed PhD coursework in art history at the Pennsylvania State University. She is the former curator of modern and contemporary art at the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA), where she worked for thirteen years. In 2016, she became the the creator and host of the ArtCurious Podcast, which was chosen as one of PC Magazine’s Best Podcasts of the Year for three years in a row (2018-2020). Dasal’s first book, ArtCurious: Stories of the Unexpected, Slightly Odd, and Strangely Wonderful in Art History, has received a much-coveted “starred” review from Publishers Weekly. Her second book, The Club: Where American Women Artists Found Refuge in Belle Epoque Paris, was released this summer to positive reviews, including profiles in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Shelf Awareness, and more. Here are links to both the Wall Street Journal and the [New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/15/books/review/the-club-jennifer-dasal.html) reviews, as well as an additional profile in the Times when "The Club" was featured as one of "20 Books to Read in July." <product_content><![CDATA[Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT (excluding AZ)/ 3pm CT / 4pm ET Join us for a conversation with L. John Harris, author of Portrait in Red: A Paris Obsession (Heyday Books). The book covers L. John Harris’s captivating, ten-year quest to uncover the story behind an anonymous 1935 portrait found discarded on a Paris sidewalk. Blending investigative art sleuthing, novelistic memoir, and rich color photography, Harris takes readers from his discovery of “The Girl in Red” on a journey that merges historical intrigue, aesthetic theory, and personal revelation—connecting the painting to his own life as an art student, food writer, and memoirist. Along the way, he weaves in themes of Parisian culture, world history, and family heritage, showing how art can unexpectedly change the course of a life. L. John Harris, born in Los Angeles, studied art and literature at UC Berkeley in the 1960s. Seduced by Berkeley’s food revolution in the 1970s, Harris worked at several iconic shops and restaurants and wrote The Book of Garlic (1974). He launched his cookbook company, Aris Books, in 1980 and his “Foodoodles” cartoon byline in Bay Area magazines led to a series of illustrated memoirs: Foodoodles (2010), Café French (2019) and My Little Plague Journal (2022). Mr. Harris co-produced with PBS in 2001 the film Los Romeros: The Royal Family of the Guitar and he serves as the curator of the Harris Guitar Collection at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Harris’s next books are a fifty-year celebration of the Garlic Revolution, followed by a history of Berkeley’s “gourmet ghetto” food scene of the 1970s and 80s. Mr. Harris lives in the Berkeley Hills in a 100-year-old Italian-style villa designed by Walter Maybeck. Musical and literary events are presented at the villa several times a year. <product_title><![CDATA[Beaux-Arts America: How the École des Beaux-Arts Influenced the Architectural Landscape of America with Roger Mummert]]></product_title>
<product_content><![CDATA[A presentation by Roger Mummert of [www.theparisproject.net](http://www.theparisproject.net)in association with the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA ### Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET Two lions sit on Fifth Avenue—as they have for more than a century—guarding the New York Public Library. Folks often are surprised to learn that the lions have names. They are named for two attributes common to the New Yorker: Patience and Fortitude. And though they were carved in the Bronx and reside in Manhattan, if they could speak they might have a bit of French accent. Their sculptor studied in Paris, as did the two architects of the magnificent library itself, who studied at l’École des Beaux-Arts. In fact, when these American graduates of this legendary school of painting, sculpture and architecture returned home, they were called “Paris Men.” The story of “Beaux Arts America” takes us back and forth across the waters, between Paris and the towns and cities of America. We will examine why so much of our American architectural landscape—our schools, post offices, government bureaus, banks, museums and homes of note—are rendered in a style that came to prominence in Paris in the 19th century. And one that America embraced as an expression of culture, stability and power. Take a look around: In many ways, we all live in Beaux-Arts America.About Roger MummertRoger Mummert is a journalist whose writing on culture and travel has appeared in the New York Times and elsewhere.
<product_title><![CDATA[Art Dealer Berthe Weill’s Contribution to French Art History: A Conversation with Lynn Gumpert and Beth Gersh-Nesic]]></product_title>
<product_content><![CDATA[### Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET"Make Way for Berthe Weill: Art Dealer of the Parisian Avant-Garde," currently at the Grey Art Museum, New York University, shines a bright spotlight on an unsung hero who believed in the emerging artists of the early 20th century, even when she earned very little for her efforts. Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, Fernand Léger, Diego Rivera, and Raul Dufy are among the best-known artists in this exhibition. However, there are many lesser-known artists among the 110 paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures, as well as photographs, catalogues, and other archival material illustrating her life and gallery. This homage to Berthe Weill (1865-1951) also reintroduces numerous gifted women artists: Suzanne Valaden, Emilie Charmy, Jacqueline Marval, and Hermione David, among many others. A conversation with co-curator Lynn Gumpert, Director of the Grey Art Museum, and art historian Beth Gersh-Nesic, will shed light on Berthe Weill's biography, the artists included in the exhibition, and the fascinating backstory for this show, which took over a decade of dedication from a brilliant team of women arts professionals. The exhibition will be on view at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art from May through September 2025, and then in Paris at the Musée de l'Orangerie, from October 2025 through January 2026. Lynn GumpertMuseum director, curator, administrator, and art historian, Lynn Gumpert has overseen and organized exhibitions on four continents. For more than 25 years, she has served as Director of New York University’s Grey Art Museum, formerly known as the Grey Art Gallery. During her tenure, the Grey has presented over 75 exhibitions. Among them are: Americans in Paris: Artists Working in Post-War France, 1946-1962 (March-July 2024); Taking Shape: Abstraction from the Arab World, 1950s 1980s (2020); The Beautiful Brain: The Drawings of Santiago Ramón y Cajal (2018); and The Downtown Show: The New York Art Scene, 1974–1984 (2006). Gumpert received a BA from the University of California at Berkeley and an MA in art history from the University of Michigan. The French government honored Gumpert with the distinction of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1999. Beth S. Gersh-NesicArt historian, Beth Gersh-Nesic is the Director of the [New York Arts Exchange](https://nyarts-exchange.com/index.html#/), an arts education service, and she is a staff writer with [Bonjour Paris,](https://bonjourparis.com/author/beth-gersh-nesic/) an online arts and culture magazine. Her books and articles focus on Picasso, the School of Paris, women artists, and the poet/art critic André Salmon, who wrote about several artists on view in the Berthe Weill exhibition at the Grey. Her translations of Salmon's books include André Salmon on French Modern Art (Cambridge University Press, 2005), and Pablo Picasso, André Salmon and “Young French Painting” (Za Mir Press, 2022). She recently retired from teaching undergraduate and graduate art history courses. <product_title><![CDATA[“Paris Goods” Luxury Retailing and the Emergence of les Grands Magasins of Paris with Roger Mummert]]></product_title>
<product_content><![CDATA[### Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET Beginning in Medieval times, travelers came to Paris seeking les articles de Paris, the superior “Paris goods” found there. They still do. Early records kept by prévôts des marchands document the commerce that took place on the bridges and quays and in the markets of Paris. The prévôts also regulated trade guilds that, in turn, ensured that their artisans maintained quality standards. Retailing of "Paris Goods" blossomed in the 19th century with the industrial revolution and the rising wealth of the bourgeoisie. The construction of passages couverts transformed commerce from a street activity to a colorful social event in gaslit arcades. This brought social changes, with the mixing of classes and the emergence of the grissette or shopgirl who became the subject of risqué literature. The advent of trains and steamship travel brought excursions of shoppers from afar. They flocked to glittering new department stores: Bon Marché, Printemps, Galleries Lafayette. These palaces of commerce added a theatrical exuberance to shopping in Paris. From the La Belle Époque to today, Paris has been synonymous with haute couture, prêt-à-porter and unsurpassed style and quality in fashion and luxury goods. Many leading fashion houses offer exhibits on the development of their premier brands: La Galerie Dior, Musée Yves St. Laurent, Musée Émile Hermès, la Fondation Cartier. This presentation celebrates luxury retailing in a style that is unmistakably Parisian and revered around the world.
