"product_content": "A presentation by Roger Mummert of [www.theparisproject.net](http:\/\/www.theparisproject.net)in association with the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA ### Event begins at 1pm PT \/ 2pm MT \/ 3pm CT \/ 4pm ET The French silk trade was established in Lyon during the Renaissance, but the prime market for the luxurious silk fabrics and elaborate designs of Lyon was 250 miles to the northwest, in Paris. In the Ancien Régime, Lyon silk had three theaters. Lyon was the industry, with master-weavers, workers, negotiants. The court of Versailles was the runway where new designs premiered for the nobility. And Paris was the retail market and ultimate fashion showcase for the wealthy bourgeoisie. After the Revolution, the head-turning fashions made from the “fabriques de soie” (silk workshops) of Lyon continued to decorate the boulevards and salons of Paris. Fortunes were made in Lyon silk, and Paris played a key economic role in it. The rising bourgeoisie and famed shops of Paris expanded the market for luxury goods. And the French government, centralized in Paris, dictated production rules and quality standards for Lyon silk, while tapping revenues from the industry. In “Silken Sisters in Commerce,” we examine a number of historic developments and cultural dynamics that have tied together Paris and Lyon. They include: Modern Commerce. The Renaissance Fairs of Lyon provided a first look at foreign goods, especially Italian silk fabrics. These exotic goods were then sold in Paris and throughout France, Europe and the Americas. The Industrial Revolution. Mechanical and design innovations streamlined silk production in Lyon. One key development was the Jacquard loom that employed a binary system of punch cards, like those used in early computers more than a century later. The process enabled stunningly detailed designs that rivaled engravings. Another advance was steam travel that hastened goods from Lyon to Paris and on to worldwide markets. The Worker’s Movement. In the 19th century, Lyon’s canuts (silk workers) banded together in unions with health plans and a unified voice. They staged some of the first worker revolts, centered in the Croix-Rousse silk district of Lyon. Karl Marx, living in Paris in the 1840s, took note and wrote of their “class struggle.” Migrations and Cultural Crossover. Financiers of Lyon’s lucrative silk trade came largely from Italy. They brought with them skilled weavers and sophisticated looms to develop a burgeoning industry in what was called “La nation Florentine de Lyon.” Indeed, both Paris and Lyon grew as “cities of immigrants,” a fact that undermines political ideologies that portray France as a “homogenous nation” and “monoculture.” About the PresenterRoger Mummert ([www.rogermummert.com](http:\/\/www.rogermummert.com)) is a writer whose work on culture and travel has appeared in the New York Times and elsewhere. "product_content": "### Event begins at 1pm PT \/ 2pm MT (except Phoenix) \/ 3pm CT \/ 4pm ET Join us for a discussion with Anne Higonnet, author of Liberty, Equality, Fashion.Liberty, Equality, Fashion is about three revolutionary women who turned themselves into style celebrities. Joséphine Bonaparte, future Empress of France, Térézia Tallien, declared the most beautiful woman in Europe, and Juliette Récamier, icon of artists and writers, had nothing left to lose. They had emerged in 1794 from the worst violence of the French Revolution, just barely. Joséphine and Térézia had been incarcerated and threatened every day with death by guillotine; Juliette had been married to her father and condemned to perpetual virginity. The three survivors reacted by overthrowing centuries of royal dress codes. They tossed away corsets, petticoats, brocades, baubles and coiffure towers to introduce light, mobile dresses, cropped hair, and the handbag. Fascination alternated with shock as Joséphine, Térézia, and Juliette boldly took control over their sexuality. Paris succumbed. News spread. All of a sudden, Europe could see the female body, and see it move. The French Revolution had defeated monarchy to usher in universal human rights and elected government. No one had imagined it would also include a total change of clothes, let alone one which would express liberty for all women. Anne Higonnet is the Barbara Novak Professor of Art History at Barnard College, Columbia University. She received her BA from Harvard College in 1980 and her PhD from Yale University in 1988. She has published, most recently, the widely reviewed Liberty, Equality, Fashion; the Women who Styled the French Revolution, as well as pieces in Vogue, Town & Country, Brooklyn Rail, and the Wall Street Journal. She has written five other books as well as many essays, and directed two book-scale digital projects. This event begins at 8:00 a.m. PT \/ 9:00 a.m. MT (except Phoenix) \/ 10:00 a.m. CT \/ 11:00 a.m. ET. The French-American Museum at Blérancourt houses numerous paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, works of art, and archives relating to France’s involvement in the American Revolutionary War. Join us for a discussion with Valérie Lagier, Chief Heritage Curator at the French-American Museum of the Château de Blérancourt. On July 4, 1776, representatives of thirteen American colonies in revolt against the British Empire signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. This founding moment of American democracy came after a year of war, at a time when the American troops were in desperate need of international support. The emissaries of the young republic turned to France, the traditional enemy of the British Crown. The one hundred and fifty French volunteers who joined George Washington’s Continental Army beginning in 1777 were not France’s only contribution to the Revolutionary War, even if the most famous among them, Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, has come to symbolize this vital support. It was truly the commitment of King Louis XVI and his minister Vergennes that enabled the insurgents to achieve independence. A Treaty of Amity and Commerce, along with a secret Treaty of Alliance signed in 1778, marked the king’s first support, soon followed by financial aid and the deployment of both land and naval forces. The insurgent forces were subsequently reinforced by the French fleet under Admiral d’Estaing, followed by the troops of Rochambeau and finally Admiral de Grasse’s fleet. Nearly 10,000 French soldiers took part in the Revolutionary War. Their presence at the Siege of Yorktown, from September 28 to October 19, 1781, led to the British surrender and effectively brought the conflict to an end. Among the regiments present at Yorktown was the Soissonnais Regiment, from the region where Blérancourt is located. On September 3, 1783, the Treaty of Versailles officially recognized the independence of the federated Republic of the United States of America. "product_title": "Why living in France can cost half as much! With Adrian Leeds",
"product_content": "### Event begins at 11am PT \/ 12pm MT (except Phoenix) \/ 1pm CT \/ 2pm ET Is it really cheaper to live in France? The answer is… yes—and no.After more than 30 years of living, working, and helping clients relocate to France, Adrian Leeds can tell you this with certainty:The cost of living in France is not just different—it’s structured differently. And unless you understand how it works, you can easily misjudge what your life here will truly cost.In This Webinar, We’ll Break It All DownJoin Adrian, along with our partners at AFUSA, for a candid and practical look at what it really costs to live well in France—based on real experience, not theory. Adrian will talk about:Housing costs: Renting vs. buying, what you actually get for your money, and why Paris isn’t the whole story Daily living expenses: Groceries, dining out, transportation—and how lifestyle choices change everything Healthcare and insurance: One of France’s biggest advantages—and what it truly costs (and saves) Taxes and hidden costs: What surprises Americans the most (and how to plan for it) France vs U.S. –– The real comparison: Why a direct dollar-for-euro comparison doesn’t tell the whole story. Many Americans arrive expecting France to be either dramatically cheaper or impossibly expensive. The truth lies somewhere in between. France offers something far more valuable: A different way of living—where quality of life often outweighs raw cost.Reserve your spot now. You will have a chance to ask questions. This webinar will be recorded for viewing at a later date on YouTube. Adrian Leeds is a French property expert and HGTV personality, as well as the author and editor of three “Nouvellettres®” (newsletters) a week! She arrived in Paris in 1994 with more than 21 years of experience in marketing and public relations, not to mention a daughter. In her need to survive in the City of Light as a single mother, she created a variety of businesses devoted to assisting other expats in their quest to fulfill their dream of living in France. Her company, the Adrian Leeds Group, is a licensed real estate agency offering complete property and relocation consultation services, primarily for North Americans and other Anglophones wanting to live and\/or invest in France. This event will be on Zoom and is free for all Alliance Française members, AATF members, and free to readers of Adrian Leeds Nouvellettres®! Yet use of the term has also evolved over the past 150 years. In this illustrated 1-hour lecture, Gary Lee Kraut examines the development and evolution of bistros in Paris since the late 19th century and tells of the place of old-fashion restaurant-bar bistros in the French capital today. Gary will also talk about various organizations devoted to defending and promoting traditional bistros, cafés and brasseries as essential vectors of sociability and art-de-vivre à la française. Originally from Trenton, New Jersey, Gary Lee Kraut is an American and French dual citizen who has been inspiring and informing travelers for 35 years through travel writing, consulting, lecturing, and guiding. He is the author of five travel guides and of hundreds of articles about France. He is also the author and voice behind four audio tours created for the VoiceMap app. Since 2009 he has operated the award-winning travel e-magazine France Revisited, francerevisited.com. Join us for a developmental reading of the script (book & lyrics, music to come) where six actors transport you back to 13th century Europe, teeming with holy wars, civil wars, and personal betrayals. Together they visit the Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, and Centre Pompidou to study one artwork each week because Henry wants Mona to memorize all the beauty and knowledge that art masterpieces can deliver, if indeed she becomes blind one day. Thanks to their lively banter, Mona and the reader learn about life, love, and how to look for the wisdom artists may convey through their art. Professor Schlesser will also tell the audience about his new novel, recently released in France, Le Chat du Jardinier (Albin Michel, 2026). Thomas Schlesser is the director of the Hartung-Bergman Foundation in Antibes, France. In the family château of Major General François-Jean de Chastellux in Burgundy, she uncovered his unpublished papers. Chastellux, a French officer in Rochambeau’s army and close friend of George Washington, became the focus of her PhD (2019) and her book (2022), which received the Prix Guizot of the Académie Française in 2023. The story of Notre-Dame de Paris begins in 1163, when Bishop Sully laid the first stone on the Île de la Cité, at the heart of medieval Paris. One of the earliest Gothic cathedrals, it took 182 years to complete. Over the centuries, this architectural marvel hosted defining moments in French history, including the coronation of a young King Henry VI of England, the marriage of the future Henri IV and Marguerite de Valois, and the crowning of Napoléon I as Emperor. After falling into neglect during the Revolution, Notre-Dame was restored by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who added the iconic spire that tragically burned in 2019. Russell Kelley is Vice President of the Alliance Française Miami Metro and the author of The Making of Paris: The Story of How Paris Evolved from a Fishing Village into the World’s Most Beautiful City (Lyons Press, 2021) and Walking Through the Ages of Paris – Ten Historical Walking Tours Through the City of Light (Lyons Press, to be published in 2026). He has lived in Paris for over 30 years – and next to Notre-Dame for the past 20 years – and attended the first mass celebrated in the rebuilt cathedral on December 8, 2024. Join us for a conversation with France Today columnist and blogger Kristin Espinasse, who will talk about her new book, A Year in a French Life. Kristin will be in conversation with Renée Amory Ketcham, Vice-President of the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA and President of the Alliance Française de Greenwich. Kristin Espinasse is the writer behind French Word-A-Day, the long-running blog and newsletter she founded in 2002. Through brief, true-to-life vignettes from her family’s life in the south of France, she pairs approachable vocabulary with cultural context and a mini glossary of vocabulary that teachers and learners can use right away. Her everyday encounters often become spontaneous posts on the blog, keeping the journal fresh, alive, and relatable. She is the author of Words in a French Life: Lessons in Love & Language in the South of France, and her ongoing book series A Year in a French Life gathers favorite stories with beautiful photos, taken locally, to illustrate each chapter. For twenty years, Kristi has written for France Today magazine, notably the back-page column “Le Dernier Mot.” Recently, La Renaissance Française awarded her the Médaille d’or des Valeurs francophones for contributions that share and celebrate francophone culture. She has spoken at Shakespeare and Company and the American Library in Paris, and at Alliance Française meetups in Seattle and Denver. In talks with students, teachers, and general audiences, Kristi focuses on everyday encounters at the market, in the vineyard, or in a village café, for example, and what they reveal about language, etiquette, and the art of noticing. Warm, candid, and practical, she aims to help audiences build confidence and curiosity in French while savoring the small moments that make francophone life so engaging. She lives in the south of France with her Franco-American family.
